The missionaries established Mambere School in 1901, which is notable for educating Kenya’s first president, Mzee Jommo Kenyatta. Consequently, the CMS and other protestant churches founded the Alliance High School in 1926 and the Alliance Girls’ High School later in 1948. Kikuyu is also home to major research institutions such as Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KARLO) and Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI).
