Where Is Kikuyu Located?

Kikuyu is a town located in Kikuyu sub-county, Kiambu County. It sits approximately 20 kilometres northwest of Nairobi’s central business district and is accessible through various routes.

Owing to its strategic location, Kikuyu has a blend of urban and semi-urban lifestyles, making it ideal for people who want to settle in a relaxed place that’s still close to the city. Ondiri swamp, the source of the Nairobi River, is also located in Kikuyu!

How to Get to Kikuyu, Kikuyu Town

Kikuyu town is less than 30 minutes from Nairobi and can be accessed through different routes. You can board a Super Metro matatu along Maragua Lane, Nairobi, and get to Kikuyu through Waiyaki Way. If you’re driving, you can also access Kikuyu through the Southern Bypass or the longer Limuru Road – Western Bypass route.

The Rich History of Kikuyu Area

Kikuyu is named after the Gikuyu people who first settled in the area during the Bantu migration. As one of the oldest towns in Kiambu County, Kikuyu has a rich history that dates back to the Scottish missionaries in Kenya.

When Scottish missionaries arrived in Kenya, they first settled in Kibwezi, then later in Kikuyu, where they set up the Church of Scotland Mission (CMS) in 1897, currently Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA). They began their influence and in 1909, the missionaries built the Scott-Watson Memorial Church, (Thogoto Chapel), now a national monument under the management of the church. The PCEA Church of the Torch (Kimuri) was later constructed in 1933 and still stands to date in Thogoto Township.

Kikuyu is also considered the cradle of the education system in Kenya because of the various institutions that began here. The missionaries established Mambere School in 1901, which is notable for educating Kenya’s first president, Mzee Jommo Kenyatta. Consequently, the CMS and other protestant churches founded the Alliance High School in 1926 and the Alliance Girls’ High School later in 1948. Thogoto, Kikuyu, is now a major education centre with two universities, one teacher-training institution, and numerous secondary and primary schools. Kikuyu is also home to major research institutions such as Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KARLO) and Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI).
